Southern Crispy Fried Chicken Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Chicken pieces (thighs and drumsticks are ideal)
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Soak the Chicken:

    • Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Ensure all pieces are well-coated.
    • Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or overnight for best results).
  2. Prepare the Seasoned Flour:

    • In a separate bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dredge the Chicken:

    • Remove the chicken from the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off.
    • Dredge each piece in the seasoned flour, ensuring every part is thoroughly coated.
  4. Heat the Oil:

    • In a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain the correct temperature.
  5. Fry the Chicken:

    • Fry the chicken in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. This ensures a crispy crust.
    • Cook each piece until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C), about 10-15 minutes per batch.
  6. Rest the Chicken:

    • Place the fried chicken on a wire rack to drain excess oil and keep the crust crispy.
  7. Serve:

    • Serve your crispy fried chicken with homemade coleslaw and biscuits for a classic Southern meal.

Enjoy your delicious Southern crispy fried chicken! 🍗
